John 6:38-41
38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
39 This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.
40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”
41 The Jews then complained about Him, because He said, “I am the bread which came down from heaven.”
“Jesus Doesn’t Want To Lose ANYONE”
In verse 38, Jesus reiterates His origin and purpose. He is from heaven, and He is on earth to do God’s will only, not His own will. Jesus’ will and God’s will are one.
Back in verse 37, Jesus said that all those whom the Father gives Him will come to Him. In verse 39, paraphrasing, Jesus says, “My Father’s will is for all people whom He has given Me to not be lost.” Who are the people that the Father has given to Jesus that He won’t lose? Verse 40 tells us that it is those who see Jesus for who He is, which is the Son of God, and believe in Him. Belief in Jesus includes obedience to Him. We know from previous verses that those who truly believe in Jesus, see Him as their spiritual bread and find complete satisfaction in Him. Those are the people whom God gave to Jesus for Him to NEVER lose. Those are the people who truly COME to Him like verse 37 said. We are to go to Jesus for satisfaction instead of the world. If we do that, He will never lose us.
In both verses 39 and 40, we are told how Jesus will save these people that He will never lose. He will save them by raising them up at the last day, which is judgment day. In verse 41, we see the Jews complaining about the things Jesus is saying. The Jews have a history of being complainers or murmurers that goes way back to the wilderness wanderings. In my own words, I can just picture and hear their conversation with each other, “Bread from heaven? How can he make such a claim? We know his family! How can he come down from heaven when we know perfectly well that he is from Nazareth?” Sadly, they just didn’t understand, or they didn’t want to understand.
Let’s look back one more time at verse 39. God’s will is for none to be lost. We know that God sent Jesus as a gift to the world. 2 Peter 3:9 says, paraphrasing, “God is patient, not wanting anyone to be lost, but wants all to repent and obey the gospel, before it’s too late.” This is why the world has been allowed to continue up to this point…..because of the patience of God. God wants to “give” as many to Jesus as He possibly can. God’s full measure of grace through Jesus Christ is still working in the lives of people every day. I know it gets discouraging for us to live in such a world of darkness. But we are not of the world. We are only in it for a short time, and we can’t lose heart. Galatians 6:9 says, “Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.” More are being saved and snatched out of the fire every day. (Jude 1:23) God doesn’t want to lose a single person who is meant to be His. He knows every person who will “come” to Jesus in the future. No matter how bad it may look out there in the world sometimes, the future is still bright, because souls are being saved. There is so much work to do. No one is a hopeless case. Every person has the potential to be a Christian. It is our commission to plant seeds or water, and God will give the increase. (1 Corinthians 3:6) We just have to stay the course, keep the faith, and finish the race. (Hebrews 12:1-2, 1 Timothy 4:7, Philippians 3:12-14) And, as God’s vessels here in the world, we are to help save as many as we can along the way, so that Jesus will not lose them on the last day.
God means for everyone to learn what the Bible teaches about how to be saved. It only takes an open heart for Jesus, and a willingness to put away what we’ve been taught in the past, and truly read what God’s Word says for ourselves…..and then accept what it says and obey it. If I can help you in any way, I would love to! Are you walking in the light? Are you in Christ? Are you saved? If you aren’t or you are not sure if you are, I’d love to help you. Are you a member of the Lord’s church, but are struggling spiritually in your walk with Christ? If you are…..believe me, I’ve been there many times, and I’d love to help you. If you have any questions, please reach out.
I love God’s Word. It challenges me to be better…..to do more in His service. It is interesting and keeps me on the edge of my seat wondering what is going to happen next. It gives me confidence and builds me up, and it brings me to my knees when my soul needs convicting! Thank you Father for the wonderful gift of Your Word!
God’s Plan of Salvation
Below is the plan that God has set forth in His Word, for humankind to receive His grace that leads to salvation and an eternity with God in heaven. This plan is straight from the Bible.
We have to hear His word. (Romans 10:17)
Upon hearing the message of Jesus, we believe it. (Mark 16:16)
Then, we confess Jesus’ name before men. (Matthew 10:32)
Next, we repent of our sins. (Acts 2:38, Acts 3:19)
Finally, we are baptized into Christ for the remission of our sins. (Acts 2:38, Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:16, Romans 6:3-4, Acts 22:16, 1 Corinthians 12:13, Galatians 3:26-27) After baptism, God adds us to His church. (Acts 2:47)
